What is wrong with this picture?

Jumpers leave workers sleepless in Seattle

Some jumpers hit the water; others land on the pavement or other solid ground. Either way, they almost always die.

The neighborhood beneath the bridge used to be docks and warehouses, and the suicides went largely unnoticed. But during the technology boom of the past two decades, it morphed into a trendy area full of office buildings, shops and restaurants, and the bodies began to fall where people could see them.

Hooray!

Is it true?

12-year-old boy undergoing sex change
VIENNA, Jan. 28 A 12-year-old European boy will become the world's youngest sex-change recipient after convincing doctors he is in the wrong body and wants to be female.

The boy, who has changed his name from Tim to Kim, has begun receiving hormone treatment in preparation for the operation that will eventually lead to a sex change, the Sunday Telegraph reported.

Doctors diagnosed Kim as transsexual two years ago, after psychiatrists determined that feelings of being in the wrong body appeared to be so deeply felt that he required treatment.

I try to avoid posting anyhing that I cannot verify without a shadow of a doubt. SO take this with a grain of salt since I have not been able to find articles or information to validate this one.

This instance raises enormous issues and possibilities for our T's. What would like have been like if human beings were able to live their gender from such an early age?

UPDATE: I still have not verified if this is a fact, rumor or urban legend. The story has sped through the blogosphere and appears to be ligitimate but who knows?

"Join The Movement" -- Momentum For McCain's Loose Stool

On the bottom of AOL mail screen is an ad for John McCain asking you to "be a part from the start"

"Join the Movement"

It makes me think of some sort of sick & twisted group poop. Do you think increasing Mc Cain's fiber will give him a firmer resolve?

Firmer...hehehe.

In any event, I think it's too late for that. He's already shit all over our shoes, and is eager to join Bush in using the Constitution as his own personal toilet paper.

All We, Like Sheep?
A Commentary on Gay Rams and the Nature/Nurture Debate

I have often argued that, first of all, it is silly to suppose that something as complex as human sexuality and romantic attractions can be boiled down to a single cause for all people. But even if such an argument could be made and it were somehow proven that homosexuality were environmental, does that mean we are any closer to “curing” it?

The best evidence says we aren’t, and that assessment seems to be shared by the collective “gut check” taking place in a society where psychoanalysis has fallen out of fashion. Psychoanalysis (that particular branch of psychology based on the methods and theories of Sigmund Freud in which childhood experiences reign supreme) reached its peak some thirty years ago, but it has been losing its influence ever since. (When’s the last time you heard of someone seeing their analyst?) The reason for its loss of influence is obvious: While it may help some people, it hasn’t proven to be terrible effective for many. Woody Allen is just as messed up today as he ever was. And yet, ex-gay groups like Exodus and NARTH continue to cling to those outdated notions because it’s all they have. There is no pill or vaccine to “cure” homosexuality. Not yet, anyway.

The article is a brilliant piece of work! Read it in its entirety at the link!

How much does bigotry cost?

Apparently $410,000 in Massachusetts. That is what it cost the MA wingnuts to get a anti-marriage amendment on the legislative agenda. The anti-gay amendment has to pass one more round of votes in the legislature in order to be put to voters who will, by their vote, determine the civil rights of tens of thousand American citizens.

From 7 News Boston:
A campaign finance report filed last week with the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance shows VoteOnMarriage.org spent more than $389,000 last year, including money raised the previous year.

It also used in-kind donations worth more than $60,700 in legal fees and staff time from the Massachusetts Family Institute, which helped form VoteOnMarriage.org to raise money for the ballot question.

Now what does it cost to fight the bigots?
MassEquality.org’s campaign director, Marc Solomon, said the group formed to fight the ballot question spent $1 million lobbying against the amendment last year.

And apparently that is not enough to retain an Americans' civil rights when pitted against the passion of religious fundamentalism, hatred and bigotry.

WA Wingnuts divided

Little Kennie Hutcherson of the Antioch Bible Church in Redmond finds himself ostracized from the rest of the wingnuts in WA because they have gay marriage in their sights while Kennie still has his panties in a wad over the anti-discrimination bill that passed last year.

So Little Kennie is reaching out to anyone who will listen which is apparently the Slavic churches of WA. What interesting bedfellows bigotry makes! Kennie started his outreach to the Slavic community last spring for the “lets keep discrimination against gays legal” that Little Timmie Eyman fumbled. Now he is back at it hoping to gather enough signatures from the backwoods bible thumpers (unfortunately for Kennie, just over ½ of the Slavic church attendees are American Citizens who can legally sign the petition).

This outreach to non-mainstream churches shows the division in the evangelicals in WA. Most churches are focusing their full attention on gay marriage because they know it is an uphill battle to re-write discrimination into the law. In addition they understand that the anti-dsicrimination bill is small potatoes compared to gay marriage so they are determined to focus their attention solely on this issue. It is nice of Little Kennie to divide the forces for us!

The Seattle Times has the full story: (emphasis mine)

Gay-rights foe finds new allies in Slavic churches

On a recent Sunday morning, at a strip mall in Kent, a few hundred people gathered to worship, rocking out to a band playing contemporary worship songs and cheering on the fiery pastor -- all in Russian.

This might seem an unlikely place for Ken Hutcherson -- Redmond's Antioch Bible Church senior pastor, who is known for outspoken views against homosexuality -- to look for allies in his effort to overturn a state law banning discrimination against gays and lesbians.

But then Pastor Andrey Shapovalov asked the children to come forward. Bless them, he said. "Pray that none of them become homosexuals or lesbians or have abortions or live a life of crime."

I think Bill Dubay said it best:

All of which has local gay-rights activist Bill Dubay musing: "I don't know why he cares so much that people have legal protections. ... It seems to me he needs a lot of attention, and this gets it for him."

Low and behold:

Hutcherson, who had a brief National Football League career as a linebacker with the Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys and San Diego Chargers, acknowledges "I have a tremendous ego."

"That's why I played pro football,"
he said. "I'm taking that same ego and energy that benefited me in football and now putting it in for the glory of God to do his will and his work."

In that regard, his ambitions are bigger than ever. He talks of organizing an international summit: "I am building a force around the world."

Delusional? So it would seem. Reaching out to the local conservative Slavic churches does not classify as a "force around the world". Apparently Little Kennie found the tipping point between ego and delusion. Next he will be putting on tights and a cape and joining Stan Lee on "Who Wants to be A Superhero?" I think his alter EGO superhero name will be "Bucolic Braggadocio".

Any other alter EGO superhero names for Little Kennie?

WA Hears testimony on Civil Unions Bill!

Washington Civil Unions Bill Gets First Hearing From 365Gay.com

(Olympia, Washington) A woman who same-sex partner died as a result of last December's floods told Washington state lawmakers Thursday that she had difficulty getting into the hospital to see her dying lover.

The Washington State Senate Committee On Government Operations and Elections was hearing the first day of testimony on a bill that would create civil unions in the state.

Charlene Strong told how partner Kate Fleming got trapped in the basement studio where she ran an audio company. As the water rose she was unable to open the door to get out.

Rescuers finally broke through and rushed Fleming to an area hospital.

But at the hospital Strong was told told she could not be with her dying partner of nearly 10 years because she was not a relative. Finally officials relented when a family member interceded. Fleming died moments later.

Even as she tried to plan Fleming's funeral Strong faced roadblocks.

Strong told committee members that if they had been an opposite-sex married couple, or had civil union rights she would have had no trouble.

As soon as I track down some of the Wingnut vitriol I will post it! Stay tuned!

The story of Jenny Boylan

I just love Oprah! If everyone on the planet was as open minded and open hearted as her the world would be a much better place.

This is from the show "The Husband Who Became a Woman"

Jenny Boylan says throughout her 40 years living as a man, she knew that she was really a woman trapped in a man's body. Being transgendered was a burden that grew heavier and heavier until it finally crushed her—her body did not match her spirit. After trying to be a man, a good husband and a father for 40 years, in 2000, Jenny made a life-altering decision to stop living a lie and began her transition into womanhood.

The really interesting portion of this interview is the discussion of the Benjamin Standards of Care.

The major purpose of the Standards of Care (SOC) is to articulate this international organization's professional consensus about the psychiatric, psychologic, medical, and surgical management of gender identity disorders.

Read it - educate yourself! The more conversation we have about the T in our LGB the better off we are as a community!

Blog I like

As Good As You is one of my favorite reads! Primarily because of posts like this one:

'Concerned Women' not concerned enough with hate crime facts
And since we apparently have CWA's attention, let us now point out the holes in Mr. Barber's logic.

>> "If it becomes law, it can easily be misapplied and used as a hammer against free speech"

-- How, Matt? In order for the hate crimes penalty prescribed in the bill to be enacted, a crime of some sort has to first be committed! We are not talking about whether or not hate speech should be protected as free speech, as it currently is in this country. That is an entirely separate debate and the criminalization of hate speech would be an entirely different bill (one, we might add, that we would likely not support). But what H.R. 254 addresses is the punishment given to those who commit a physical crime that's deliberately targeted towards a person's race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.

I love it when the facts and logic can so handily destroy the wingnuts arguments. The sad part is that the people who are listening to the CWA and the Matt Barbers of the land don't actually believe the facts, they are moved by emotion which trumps facts, figures and logic any day. It is still a wonderful post, it is awesome to see that some of us out there are looking at what these wingnuts are saying and applying some basic critical thinking techniques to their statements.

See the entire posting for the rest of the lovely evisceration of Matt Barber...

AFA panties in a wad

I think the American Family Association and Don "wild man" Wildmon spend way too much time watching television. They are calling to expand their failed "Boycott Ford Campaign" because a Ford commercial aired during and episode of the new FX series "Dirt".

The scene described as "graphic and offensive" was posted at You Tube by the AFA!

There is no explicit sex, no skin showing, just a good illusion that the actors are involved in a racy encounter.

CAUTION: The rating for this episode was "M" for mature content; viewer discretion advised.

I think it is really funny to note that the AFA are the ones who put this You Tube clip up for everyone to watch over and over again and it has had over 39,000 hits and 36 people have added it to their favorites (presumable so they can watch it over and over and over).

Oppressed Gay Youth? Fight back!

Gay youth are one of our most valuable resources and the most vulnerable! Gay teen suicide rates are the highest of any youth group in our nation. The constant harassment, bullying, and oppression in our school districts have prompted many districts to form Gay Straight Alliances.

If you are a youth who is suffering from discrimination and harassment FIGHT BACK! Start your own GSA! For Spokane area youth, contact the Odyssey Youth Center at 509-325-3637. Or check out the GLSEN documents and support center HERE.

All youth should have the opportunity to be themselves and have a healthy, happy childhood without the fear of bullying and harassment!

Trans support

I have met many transgender and have an enormous appreciation for the process of becoming who you are. The years of therapy, lifetime of medication, surgery process and mental and emotional trials that trans people go through is amazing to me. I thought coming out was the hardest thing in the world to do but coming out as trans? Yikes! That is a whole new realm of being that we as a community are just beginning to understand.

I have to admit that I am just beginning to understand what it means to be trans. (I am not trans myself but have met many wonderful kind hearted and courageous T's who are struggling in this community.)

Papillon Spokane is the only regional Transgender Support and Social group that I am aware of. Well worth it to check them out at their website, especially if you are just learning who you really are.

Another site for anonymous support that has some great resources is Laura’s Playground. There is online live chat support not only for trans people but also their spouses, significant others, family members and friends. (I like going to this site just to listen to the voice on the home page!)

I have to admit that I am a little jealous of the rights of the Ts, they actually have the right to legally marry a person of the same biological gender here in good old WA state! A F – M trans can marry a woman and a M – F can marry a man, which means that two people who are biologically the same sex can get married – one of them has to be living hir life as their true gender. (No, I did not typo, hir is a gender neutral pronoun that is not yet widely used.)

We are experiencing a change of attitude towards being more tolerant and supporting of our Ts. We have a long way to go even among our own LGB community to understanding the T in our acronym. It is a fascinating transition that deserves the support of all of the LGB community. For some reason we seem to forget the T portion of that acronym when it comes to rights and legislating equality. I hope to see a day of equality for all when we as a community refuse to give up our T as a sacrificial lamb when the going gets tough.

The Nigerian Law

Some of you have probably heard about the horific anti-gay laws being considered in Nigeria. The law would ban EVERYTHING related to homosexuality. This includes holding hands, browsing gay related websites, all publications and any social groups of gays. Gays are also prevented from association or organizing.

From the Advocate:

Activists fight Nigerian anti-gay law
Nigeria seems certain to legislate one of the world's most sweeping and repressive anti-gay laws unless international pressure is bought to bear on the Nigerian government in the next few weeks, according to Peter Tatchell of the London-based LGBT rights group OutRage!

I am now marking Nigeria off of the list of places to visit in my life time.

I am also going to recommend the entire congregation of the Westboro Baptist Church relocate their operations to Nigeria where they will apparently find numerous like minded individuals to preach to.

A Gay Jew in Nazi Berlin - The Gad Beck Story

I just read the most incredible book EVER! It is a quick read and you can order it from Aunties Book Store here in Spokane!

Beck lived through horrors of Nazi persecution of Jews and survived. It is truly amazing that any Jew survived during this time but to be a openly gay Jew in addition is truly amazing. Throughout the entire memoir, Beck meets every situation with daring, ingenuity and a refined sense of humor. The story of this inspiring person is one of tragedy, adversity, love and even joy at the prospects of living for just one more day.

Because Gad was one third Christian, by the legal definition of race as created by the Nazi’s, he was considered of mixed race or "mischling" and was not deported with the first full blooded Jews. Beck remained in Berlin and became a leader in the Chug Chaluzi, a youth oriented resistance group. Through his activities within the Chug, Beck was able to assist Jews to live illegally in Berlin and also began an underground railroad to help Jews escape to Switzerland. “As a homosexual, I was able to turn my trusted non-Jewish, homosexual acquaintances to help supply food and hiding places.” Gad Beck.

Beck assisted in organizing the emigration of Jewish survivors to Palestine after the war. In 1947 he joined his family in Palestine and after a period of 15 years of settled stability, Beck returned to Berlin. In the 1960s Beck founded the German-Israeli Student Association (BDIS) and was a highly demanded public speaker. In 1976, Beck met Julius Laufer who remained his lifelong companion.

Beck experienced moments in his life where he was forced to completely redefine himself and re-engineer his underground and illegal activities in order to adjust to the changing realities of Jewish persecution. Beck was a resilient leader who never despaired in the face of adversity; he met challenges head on and persevered during the most heinous of atrocities in human history.

The most significant turning point that Beck underwent was after an entire family was called up on “the list”. This family was dear to the Beck’s and had been personal friends for many years. Their son, Manfred, was one of Beck’s most cherished lovers and was also a grade school classmate. “The list” was a register of up to one thousand Jews who were required to appear at a local school (Beck’s former grade school). The Jews on “the list” were told that they were being deported to work on munitions at a Nazi factory. Not until later did Beck and the Jews remaining in Berlin learn that these Jews were sent to their deaths at concentration camps.

For the resue mission, Beck disguised himself by dressing in a Nazi uniform. He walked into the school and demanded that the Jew “Manfred” be released. The Nazi supervisor of the detainment center allowed Manfred to be taken into custody by Beck.

“I walked out of my old school building onto the street. The buildings were familiar, the sidewalk, the streetlamps. I was back in my world, with my Manfred next to me. I was filled with such a combination of triumph and security as we walked down the street together, past the former Old Age Home, past the entrance to the cemetery, with its couple of trees. Only a few minutes. I beamed at him, held out a twenty-mark bill – quite a bit for those times – and said quietly, ‘Here’s some money. Now go to my uncle in Teltow like we discussed and wait for me. I’ll come as soon as I can.’

“He stood there, took the twenty marks, and looked at me. “Gad, I can’t go with you. My family needs me. If I abandon them now, I could never be free.” No smile, no sadness. He had made his decision. We didn’t even say goodbye. He turned around and went back.

In those seconds, watching him go, I grew up.”

Gad never saw Manfred again and never overcame the loss of his first true love.

His attraction to men allowed him to use sex as a tool to achieve some of his goals, from getting food and supplies to facilitating the evacuation of Jews to Switzerland. The escapades were mutually beneficial and Beck seemed to enjoy being creative in achieving his goals.

In the most harsh of circumstances Beck still maintained a positive attitude and dealt with these situations with humor. In one case, an Italian refugee caught his eye as he was working at clearing rubble as a slave laborer for the Reich.
“For an Italian he was unusually tall and thin, with black curly hair, fiery eyes, and soft lips that turned up at the corners happily. Even back then that was an important detail for me. I keep away from people with turned-down mouths. Much too much trouble to get them turned up.”

This Italian became the object of his desire and served as a distraction from the slave conditions. Even in the midst of the labor camp Beck treated this situation with humor as well;
“I didn’t know of any helpful guidebooks with tips for such a situation: how do you pick up a foreign prisoner while doing slave labor?”

For the entire sordid and exciting story you must read the book! Order it from Aunties!

From the diary archives - a note on working out

It is a new year and like many people out there I have made a resolution to see my abs one last time before I die. (Abs are those abdominal muscles that everyone has and we could all see if we could only move the layers of fat out of the way.)

I had started a work out regime with the hubby in 2000 (which, I think, is right around the last time I worked out) so I went scavenging around the old computer archives to see what I did and I came across this gem from the diaries when we lived in Connecticut (perhaps some of you out there can relate?):

March 10, 2000

This may, in fact, be the beginnings of my last will and testament.

This week we decided to start a work out program to get nice and fit for summer. We went to a sports store named “Dicks” to pick up a couple of dumbbells that were on sale for $39.95. We shopped around the store for a little while, it was HUGE, they have everything for every kind of sport (most of which I never heard of). Anyhow, $414 dollars later we walk out with our new 300 pound home gym.

Our first workout was hauling the thing up the two flights of stairs to get it into the office where we were going to set it up. The process of hauling one weight at a time up the stairs took nearly an hour, so of course afterwards we had to sit down and eat a bag of Doritos for dinner.

I opened up the box when we finally got it in place and was a little intimidated by the amount of stuff to put together. I had to get a ruler to measure the bolts that were all different sizes. It was such a pain to assemble; right away I stubbed my pinky toe on one of the boxes of weights. This worked out well though because I discovered a new way to stretch my hamstrings while I was running cold water over my bleeding toe in the bathroom sink. So, thanks to my incredible manual dexterity, I spent six hours, went through a box of Band-Aids and ended up with four bruises on my ankles and shins before I got the thing set up.

Once again we apparently cannot judge the size of objects outside of our house relative to the amount of space we have inside our house. (Our first Christmas tree and almost every Christmas tree there after are prime examples!) Since I was wounded in action putting the set together, I let Hubby handle the rearranging and removal of all of the furniture (except one stool and our mini-desk) in order to get the thing to fit. (Good thing we have storage in the basement!)

So on Monday we started our workout, it is a six day plan. The first day is upper body, then a 20 minute jog on the second day, then lower body workout on the third followed by a jog, upper body and then a jog again on the sixth day. I quickly determined that jogging wasn’t for me (thanks again to my manual dexterity) there wasn’t a sidewalk crack or hill that I didn’t stumble over and there wasn’t a low hanging branch that didn’t whip me in the face or scratch my forehead! So I tried aerobics… whoever came up with the idea of jumping around in your living room should be shot! I soon discovered the pain of a branch whipped face doesn’t last nearly as long as the pain of a rug burn. So it was back to jogging in the hopes that I can get better at it the more I do it. (Only later did I realize how easily I deceive myself)

On the lower body work out day we have to work out our abdominals. The wonderful book that my Hubby got to help us with our exercises suggested sixty inclined sit ups… after 20 I thought I was going to throw up so I gave up and went back to simple crunches.

Each day we have to eat six meals and each meal is a small portion of protein and carbohydrates and then for two meals we have a portion of veggies (yum yum). I don’t mind this part so much except that I am prohibited from eating sugar, milk or cheeseburgers.

On the free day we can eat anything we want so I have planned a nice cup of coffee with cream and sugar, a six pack of Pepsi, six cheeseburgers with bacon, a pizza and anything with a lot of melted squirt cheese like 7-11 nachos or something mmmm mmmm. At the beginning of the program we had to weigh, measure and take pictures of our selves so we can track our progress (and theoretically be pleased with the results at the conclusion of the program).

On Monday, (upper body day) we decided that changing out the weights on the dumbbells was too much of an inconvenience (and far too much work) so on Thursday evening we went and bought some more dumbbells that are solid. We bought two 10 pounds and then two of each in 5 pound increments up to thirty-five pounds. Again it took us at least an hour to make enough trips up the stairs to get them situated in the work out room (I am using this as my work out for the day).

Note about my job: My work is still going well even though I am still a temporary employee I think I would like to go permanent here. My boss is fun even though he takes to congratulating himself quite often on things that he has accomplished. There was a piece of equipment in the back that is supposed to allow people to securely access their email and the system from home. It had never worked properly so he went to work on it and finally got it up and running last week. He was so self congratulatory that I asked him if his back ever hurt from kissing his own ass so much. I think I might be a temp for a while longer.

Gay marriage in the hands of Gen – Next

Or so it would seem.

The good news, according to a recent Pew Research Center and MacNeil-Lehrer poll, young adults age 18-25 have more liberal views of race and homosexuality.

The bad news, this same poll indicates that this generation is less inclined to vote than other generations.

So, I guess until something dramatically changes with older generations, we have to patiently wait for our civil rights until this generation decides it is a good idea to get out there and vote! Hopefully, if marriage comes to a vote in Washington, the 18-25ers will get to the polls!

Report: Generation Next More Confident

The young adults of Generation Next are more optimistic, more tolerant and more likely Democratic voters than their predecessors, according to a new study.

Are less inclined to vote than older generations, though young voter turnout was up significantly in 2004. About 54 percent of those from 18 to 24 voted in 2004, and 74 percent of those 25 and over voted, Keeter said.

Have more liberal views than other generations on questions of race and homosexuality and immigration.

So there you have it. Go tell all of the 18-25 year olds that you know to get registered to vote! Then tell them to actually fill out the ballot and send it in. (They may need reminding every November.)

State of our schools

From 365Gay.com:

23% Of Washington School Districts Ban Teaching About Homosexuality

(Seattle, Washington) Nearly a quarter of the school districts in the state of Washington bar teachers from talking about homosexuality and nearly a third do not allow teachers to discus condoms.

And another reason to contact your elected representative.

At an Olympia news conference to release the study state Rep. Shay Schual-Berke (D) said she will reintroduce a bill this legislative session to make medically accurate sex education mandatory in Washington schools.

With Democrats in the super majority this should be a slam dunk, however, opposition to teaching medically accurate sex education is VERY strong and well funded.

If you don't know who your elected representatives are go here.

Your voice can make a difference - all you have to do is use it!

Getting to know our elected marriage equality advocates

WA State Representative Dave Upthegrove

State Representative Dave Upthegrove spent some time in Spokane just before Christmas to visit the Odyssey Youth Center and the Gonzaga Young Democrats. Rep Upthegrove is the only state legislator who has his own "MySpace" account. You can take a look at his online profile at Myspace/Upthegrove.

Rep. Upthegrove is from the 33rd Legislative District which includes Des Moines, Burien, Sea Tac, Normandy Park and Kent areas just south of Seattle. While he is representing his own constituency he has also visited our area to engage in conversation about the "East Side" views on marriage equality and LGBT youth issues.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Rep. Upthegrove during a fund raiser for Senator Chris Marr (who ousted LGBT arch nemesis Brad Benson in November). Then got to know him a little better when he visited Spokane last fall. I found him to be witty, intelligent, authentic and with a genuine passion for politics and the struggles of the LGBT community on both sides of the state.

I recently asked Upthegrove what his thoughts were on the marriage initiatives. He said that “The long-term goal remains marriage equality for gay & lesbian families. However, we recognize that more work remains to be done to educate the public and our legislative colleagues about the need for and importance of marriage equality.”

According to Upthegrove, a key component of the initiative is building healthy communities. “We will continue to make the point that all families, including gay & lesbian families deserve access to the stability, security and equal benefits of marriage. This is important because strong families are the building blocks of healthy communities.” Most importantly, building healthy secure families and community is the foundation of a healthy and tolerant society.

Rep. Upthegrove and 24 other Democrats who sponsored HB 1350, which would repeal the “Defense of Marriage Act”, do not expect this legislation to advance through the process this year. In addition to HB 1350, in a bi-partisan effort, he and his colleagues have introduced HB 1351 which provides a few of the basic rights that married couples are granted by our government.

"In order to provide some level of immediate protection to gay & lesbian families, and in order to continue to educate our colleagues and the public, we also have introduced House Bill 1351 to provide a limited number of protections for all same-sex domestic partners, and for opposite-sex domestic partners over the age of 62 (because they have unique problems relating to pensions and federal benefits). HB 1351 has 55 co-sponsors, including 3 Republicans, and we are optimistic that we can pass the bill into law. Early indications have been positive from the Democratic leadership of both the House and the Senate, as well as Governor Gregoire."

I asked Rep. Upthegrove what we could do to support the efforts in Olympia:

"The best thing supporters can do is to contact their legislators to ask them to support the domestic partnership bill (HB 1351) this year. Continue to educate your legislators about the importance of full marriage equality. Talk to your friends and neighbors about why marriage equality matters to you. The Legislature is a reflection of the people who send us here, so it is important to engage in community and public education. Join civil rights groups, donate money to organizations that are working for marriage equality. Most of all, don't lose hope. We're making progress, and with your continued commitment and hard work the values of equality and fair treatment will prevail."

Upthegrove is currently the youngest member of the Washington State House of Representatives and a strong advocate for equality and youth involvement in civic affairs and politics. He is one of our elected representatives taking a stand for equality and social justice. Please let him know what you think! You can send Rep Upthegrove some love for taking a stand on marriage equality here.

HRC "Best Places to Work"

The Human Rights Campaign has released its "Best Places to Work", workplace equality index. Take a peek at it? Did your employer make the list?

Individuals can be fired in 33 states if they are gay, lesbian, or bisexual, and 42 states if they are transgender. HRC recognizes these Best Places to Work for GLBT Equality as companies that have made a commitment to end discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in the workplace.

Also on the website take a look at the "Buying Guide for Equality".

AND LASTLY but most importantly, our own city of Spokane has a resource directory for our allies and friends. If you are looking for a place to spend your money always look in the INBA directory first! Send 'em some love!

Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is FINALLY doing its last season!

Bravo Celebrates 'Queer Eye: The Final Season' with 10 New Episodes in Summer 2007

Bravo spotlights the summer of 2007 with the final season of one of TV's most groundbreaking reality series, the Emmy Award-winning Queer Eye.

The first season was great, I didn't miss an episode! Then the second season hit and *yawn* they regurgitated the same tired old jokes, the same culinary, fashion and design. So I stopped watching. Once you have seen one straight guy get his back waxed and eyebrows tweased you have pretty much seen them all.

This last season looks like the "Fab Five" are digging into the bowels of straightdom to pull the dregs of fashion don'ts out into the light and spruce them up. Same old same old!

Watch if you must, it should be like an LA high speed chase that we can't take our eyes off of even tho we know the outcome will be gruesome and tragic.

I've said it before and I will say it again.... *sigh*

Back in an earlier post I commented on the shocking notion of using divorce law to legally separate those that cannot be legally married.

If, by law, same sex couples have to utilize divorce law in order to separate why do the marriage laws not apply?

Case in point:
NY Judge Voids Mass. Gay Marriage But Upholds $780K Post-Nup

A New York City judge has ruled that the marriage of a city couple in Massachusetts was never valid in New York State but their separation agreement is.

If you don’t have a valid marriage, how can you have a valid divorce?

Sadly, same sex couples have more legal protections when terminating their relationships than when establishing them.

MLK Jr. Day Observances

MLK Observances This Year Include Gay-Positive Coretta Scott King For First Time

In March 2004, she told a university audience that same-sex marriage is a civil rights issue and denounced a proposed amendment to the Constitution ban it.

"Gay and lesbian people have families, and their families should have legal protection, whether by marriage or civil union," she said in a speech at The Richard Stockton College in Pomona, New Jersey.

"A constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages is a form of gay bashing and it would do nothing at all to protect traditional marriages."

I posted a tribute to Coretta Scott King when she passed last year here.

If only they would take her words to heart as they did Martin Luther King Jr.

In Spokane, the MLK Day parade will begin at the Opera House at 10AM. There will be booths and activities at the Convention Center all day.

Let the bleating begin!

In response to the two bills introduced in the Washington State Legislature by Ed Murray, the right wing religious conservative group "Allies for Marriage and Children" responded in quick typical fashion with a press release.

The press release is the typical blathering about how same sex marriage will bring the destruction of Society. The really funny part that sent a side-splitting guffaw roaring our of me is this:

Another Allies Board member and co-chair, Aaron Haskins of the Coalition for Community Development and Renewal in Seattle, (and Cheryl Haskins’ husband of 25 years) said: “Marriage is not a package of government benefits. It is not a right. It is more than a piece of paper. It was not created by government, and it should not be redefined,” Aaron Haskins said.

OK Aaron (who, by the way, is redefining marriage in his statement!) if you do not have the government recognition, the "package of government benefits" or the "piece of paper" that says you are married then are you in fact married? That would be a big fat in-your-face NO! You may be married in your mind but the reality is that you are not in fact legally married unless you have "a piece of paper" that is signed by a legal authority of the government. Nice try bozo.

They go on to say that "traditional marriage" must be preserved but offer no definition of "traditional marriage" other than it is between one man and one woman. They fail to acknowledge that only recently has marriage been anything other than a legally binding business arrangement between two families. Traditional marriage was the purchase of a woman from another family for a dowry, a man that could afford it could purchase as many women as he wished.

Each generation defines marriage in its own unique fashion. "Traditionally" the definition of marriage has been as fluid as the uniqueness of those who choose to marry. The government benefits package is the exact discrepancy between marriage discrimination and marriage equality.

Gay marriage bills introduced in WA state!

Can't wait to post some bleating of the wingnuts - stay tuned!

The strategy of our lawmakers is interesting to say the least. It would appear that these two bills are designed to not actually succeed but to further the debate and education of the public. It will be interesting to see if the strategy works (knocking on wood).

The [two] bills introduced Thursday would correct a longstanding wrong the five lawmakers said at a morning news conference.

Senator Ed Murray, D-Seattle, prepared the legislation along with four colleagues in the House: Representatives Joe McDermott, D-Seattle; Jim Moeller, D-Vancouver; Jamie Pedersen, D-Seattle; and Dave Upthegrove, D-Des Moines.

"Our goal is marriage equity, and we will work for that," said Rep. McDermott. "In the meantime, our effort is to provide immediate relief, immediate benefits, to same-sex couples."

Murray has introduced same-sex marriage measures before, the first in 1997, but none has ever received a hearing.

Murray said he wants to make sure at the very least that benefits are extended this year.

"This is not about domestic partnership; this is about marriage," said Murray. "The only reason we are introducing the domestic partnership bill is to further the cause of educating the public."

Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, D-Spokane, said she would co-sponsor the domestic partnership bill in the Senate.

Gov. Chris Gregoire (D) supports "marriage-like civil rights" but a spokesperson said the governor had not seen either bills.

Lambda Legal, one of the groups involved in last year's lawsuit, applauded the legislation.

"Without offering even basic protections, the state of Washington currently holds same-sex couples as strangers under the law," said Jennifer C. Pizer, Senior Counsel in Lambda Legal's Western Regional Office.

" We believe that the right way to fix this injustice is by treating all of us equally - by changing the law to allow devoted same-sex couples to marry just as different-sex couples can. As states like Washington move toward that goal, we welcome the passage of intermediate laws that recognize our families, offer some critical legal protections, and help the state care better for Washingtonians."

Republicans say they will oppose both bills.

Sen. Dan Swecker, R-Rochester, is promoting a constitutional amendment that would bar same-sex marriage. He said any attempt to legalize gay marriage should be put to voters as a referendum.

Just once I would like the religious conservatives (not all Republicans oppose marriage equality!) to put their relationships to a public vote! They screech about big government and about invasion of privacy and yet they put forth these bills in the form of constitutional amendments that create larger government and greater intrusion into our personal lives! Yeesh.

Good for us or Bad for us?

There has been much conversation and debate about the gay sheep experiments going on in Oregon. "Science told: hands of gay sheep"
SCIENTISTS are conducting experiments to change the sexuality of “gay” sheep in a programme that critics fear could pave the way for breeding out homosexuality in humans.

The experiments introduce hormones into the systems of male sheep that are oriented towards sexual intercourse with other male sheep. The hormones appear to change the orientation and the once gay sheep start having intercourse with female sheep.

On the one hand it is good for us because the right wing religious conservatives cannot start bleating "see, we told you homos can be cured" because this would validate the premise that homosexuality is biological. This is good for us because it can now be proven that attraction to the same sex is a biological function; we are gay not by choice but by design. According to religious conservatives the only biological “designer” out there is God, in fact, religious conservatives believe that God’s law is natural law and that nothing occurs in nature that is not the will of God. God is the ultimate designer (look at any argument for intelligent design and creationism). Therefore, if homosexuality is in fact biological then homosexuality, by this definition, is God’s will because God “designed” us to be gay.

Coincidentally, there are 28,200 Google results for the search “gay sheep Oregon” and the leading ultra conservative activist group “Concerned Women of America” (who are immediate to respond to any gay findings) have absolutely nothing on their website in response to the scientific study! On the ultra-conservative-facts-be-damned World Net Daily website (fondly referred to as “wingnut daily” by progressive bloggers”) there is only one article regarding the gay sheep. Because they know they will lose the argument if they acknowledge homosexuality as occurring by design, the following is the best they could come up with:

Lesbian tennis star slams 'gay sheep' research
OHSU researchers found a difference between "straight" and "gay" rams in one region of the hypothalamus. While the region is generally twice as large in rams as in ewes, in male-oriented rams it was nearly identical in size to hat in normal females. Similar differences have been found in the brains of homosexual men, but since most of those studied had died of AIDS-related illnesses, scientists were unable to say whether the condition was related to disease or sexual orientation.

In true wingnut fashion, they do not cite the study that was conducted of gay men so this "study" is likely loosely based on fact or completely fabricated.

This issue has been going on since 1995! Only recently did it come to the forefront and start receiving media attention as a result of Martina Navratilova’s letter to the President of Oregon State University. The study itself is a punch to the face of the religious conservatives because it is scientific proof that homosexuality is biological in nature.

NOW – Bad for us.
The fact that homosexuality is a biological function and, according to the Oregon State University scientific research, can be treated with hormone therapy, would place homosexuality squarely back on a “treatable disease” list, just like diabetes. This was Navratilova’s objection to the experiments. What is to stop a pregnant woman from treating her unborn child with the “anti-gay hormone” therapy? This would put an end to gay men being born and ultimately end homosexuality (in theory).

The big hole in the experiment that I see is that it has been conducted on male sheep ONLY! What about female homosexuality? Does the same condition with the hypothalamus occur in women? No studies that I have seen have been conducted on lesbians.

Also, being gay is not just sexual attraction; there is the psychological and emotional attraction as well. The studies only indicate that the sheep will convert to heterosexual physical interaction (and it was not conclusive that the sheep became exclusively heterosexual). What about the emotional aspect of gay relationships? No, treatments to fix the hypothalamus will not eliminate homosexuality; after all, humans are not sheep! We have emotions and loving bonds that transcend any physical relationship. Gays have existed thru ought history and will exist until the end of time, the OSU is further proof of this fact. This is what the religious conservatives are afraid of and why they are not acknowledging the existence of the OSU research.

Bakker, Brown: What the hell happened to Christianity?

Why are Christians supporting laws that
force others to live by their standards?

By Jay Bakker and Marc Brown
Special to CNN

Editor’s note: Jay Bakker, son of former Praise The Lord leaders Jim Bakker and Tammy Faye Messner, is minister of Revolution Church and subject of a new documentary series, "One Punk Under God," on Sundance Channel. Marc Brown is a Revolution staff member.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- What the hell happened? Where did we go wrong? How was Christianity co-opted by a political party? Why are Christians supporting laws that force others to live by their standards? The answers to these questions are integral to the survival of Christianity.

While the current state of Christianity might seem normal and business-as-usual to some, most see through the judgment and hypocrisy that has permeated the church for so long. People witness this and say to themselves, "Why would I want to be a part of that?" They are turned off by Christians and eventually, to Christianity altogether. We can’t even count the number of times someone has given us a weird stare or completely brushed us off when they discover we work for a church.

So when did the focus of Christianity shift from the unconditional love and acceptance preached by Christ to the hate and condemnation spewed forth by certain groups today? Some say it was during the rise of Conservative Christianity in the early 1980s with political action groups like the Moral Majority. Others say it goes way back to the 300s, when Rome’s Christian Emperor Constantine initiated a set of laws limiting the rights of Roman non-Christians. Regardless of the origin, one thing is crystal clear: It’s not what Jesus stood for.

His parables and lessons were focused on love and forgiveness, a message of "come as you are, not as you should be." The bulk of his time was spent preaching about helping the poor and those who are unable to help themselves. At the very least, Christians should be counted on to lend a helping hand to the poor and others in need.

This brings us to the big issues of American Christianity: Abortion and gay marriage. These two highly debatable topics will not be going away anytime soon. Obviously, the discussion centers around whether they are right or wrong, but is the screaming really necessary? After years of witnessing the dark side of religion, Marc and I think not.

Christians should be able to look past their differences and agree to disagree. This allows people to discuss issues with respect for one another. Christians are called to love others just as they are, without an agenda. Only then will Christianity see a return to its roots: Loving God with all of your heart and loving your neighbor as yourself.
The Apostle Paul describes this idea of love beautifully in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7: "Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance."

But don’t take our word for it; look at what Jesus and his followers stood for in his time and what Christianity stands for today. Then come to your own conclusion.
